Your feet aren’t just along for the ride, they’re your connection to the ground. Yet we often tuck them into socks and cushioned shoes and forget about them.
We train our legs, hips, and core. But when was the last time you gave your feet their own workout?
Whether you’re in your 20s or your 80s, let’s give those feet some attention!
When I look at foot health, I focus on three things: mobility, strength, and mechanics: how your feet move, support you, and work with the rest of your body.
Your feet also help you sense the ground beneath you. With every step, sensory nerves in your soles send your nervous system information that helps guide balance and movement. They’re not just your foundation, they’re part of your navigation system.
Research in older adults has linked weaker toes, reduced ankle mobility, and poorer sensation under the feet with falls. Foot and ankle exercises can improve strength and balance, making them a worthwhile part of a well-rounded training routine.
In other words, those small muscles deserve some love!
A tree needs healthy roots to support it. I like to think of our feet the same way.
We spend plenty of time strengthening our bodies, but our feet deserve a place in that routine, too. Foot-strengthening exercises can improve balance and how the foot functions, not just how strong it feels.
You may have heard that around 7,000 steps a day is a useful target for health. Research supports that goal for many adults, with benefits starting well below it. It’s not a pass-or-fail number, but it’s a reminder that everyday movement matters.
My goal is to help you give your feet the attention they deserve so you feel better equipped to keep doing the things you love.
Foot health isn’t only about strength. It’s also about understanding how you move.
How do your feet meet the ground? How do your toes contribute? What happens at your ankles as you walk, run, or hike?
Those are the kinds of questions we’ll explore together. Rather than chasing one “perfect” way to move, we’ll get curious about your movement and practice exercises that fit your starting point.
As you can probably tell, I’m pretty excited about feet!
I recently returned from Foot Fest and a Gait Happens Trainer Certification Seminar with new knowledge, fresh ideas, and even more enthusiasm for sharing this work with our community.
Join me for Gait Happens: Strong From the Ground Up, a hands-on clinic where we’ll get to know our feet a little better and learn exercises you can add to your regular routine.
You don’t need to be a runner or have a foot problem to get curious about your foundation. We’ll meet you where you are and start building from the ground up.
