Coach Suz was one of the first people that I met when my family moved to Durango years ago. She coached my kids in swimming and welcomed them with open arms. There has been a lot of water under the bridge since that time but she has been a consistent positive influence in my life and that of my kids. Here is a little profile so you can get to know her better.

I love coaching because it gives me the opportunity to get up close and personal in the lives of the people with whom I work. This is where real change happens. People that are looking to change course and need guidance, encouragement, and motivation are so rewarding. Sometimes their goals seem so daunting to them, but once we start working on them and breaking them into chunks, they start to see progress. While improving fitness is the stated goal, I think it’s important to see all sides of what is happening the good, the bad, the amazing and the sad. There is always more to the story.

The thing that never gets old with coaching is seeing people accomplish large and small feats of greatness. It could be their first pull up or getting a PR in a workout or even just showing up for the first time. I love seeing the light and accomplishment in people’s eyes in those moments. Knowing I was a small part of that fills me up.

A big part of my approach has to getting folks healthier has to do with food. Exercise is important, but without addressing nutrition too, we will never move the dial. As coaches, we are examples and need to show the way. We can't ask others to do what we don't do ourselves. I use macronutrient counting to keep a handle on my nutrition and it has made a huge change in my life. It feels sustainable. I look at food as fuel and while I love some grilled macaroni and cheese every now and again, I make better decisions for my longevity the vast majority of the time. I can control what goes in my mouth even when their are other factors that I can't control.

I read and listen to audiobooks on character, coaching, hope, and struggle. I am constantly working on myself to be a better friend, partner, and coach so I can help others. I believe this is my mission. I also love to tell jokes. In fact, I try to tell someone a joke everyday because you never know what people are struggling with and it just might make their day a little brighter. If you are having a tough day, look for me at the gym and I will have a high five waiting for you.
