Thanks for leading from the front Diane.
Thanks for leading from the front Diane.

Last week we celebrated Diane’s 80th birthday. She is a bit of a celebrity around Catacombs because of her “can-do” attitude and the effort that she brings to every single workout. She’s also a genuinely kind and caring person. Many of us around the gym have watched in amazement and declared that we want to be like Diane when we grow up. She is a model of what a lifetime of making mostly healthy choices, staying active, and prioritizing health and wellness can do.

I frequently use Diane as an example when I am talking with someone who is not sure if CrossFit is for them. Let’s be honest, CrossFit gets mixed reviews in the court of public opinion. A lot of people have had bad experiences, or know someone that got injured, or have seen the extremes of CrossFit as a sport and decided that CrossFit is not for them. We won’t get a second chance with many of those people. But there are also a lot of people that are afraid to give it a try because they are out of shape or don’t want to be embarrassed by what they can or can’t do. They think they are too young or old, too overweight or underweight, not strong enough or fast enough. For these people, I always explain that we are a pretty motley crew. When they hear the stories of athletes in their 7th and 8th decades, athletes who have lost 50+ pounds, athletes who are winning the battle against addiction or stress, or depression, there is often a softening and a flicker of hope.

We have athletes from age 11 to age 80. We welcome everyone regardless of where they are on their fitness journey or in life right now. Catacombs is a starting point for change and there are no prerequisites other than a willingness to give your best every day. Thank you to all the Diane’s that are willing to share their stories and live them every day. And thank you to all of you who help make this place so special.
