The week has been full of news around nutrition. While the major news outlets are obsessing over  Donald Trump's hairstyle or the color of Hilary Clinton's pantsuit, you may have missed these incredibly important developments around health and nutrition. It frustrates me that they don't grab more attention as it seems so fundamental to individual health and ultimately the health of the country. Please give them both a read and forward to someone you know that might benefit.

Finally the evidence is in to show that the sugar industry paid Harvard scientists in the 1960s to produce a report implicating fat rather than sugar in cardiovascular disease. "So what", you ask? Yes, this happens all the time but the level of influence and outright interference in this study is particularly egregious. The studies were handpicked by the sugar industry, the Harvard scientists were paid by the sugar industry, and industry execs were given early drafts to review and comment on prior to publication. Their stated goal was to get everyone focused on dietary fat to take the attention (and heat) off a growing concern around sugar and cardiovascular disease. Not only that, this study served as a foundational piece to early government nutritional guidelines and shaped nutrition research and recommendations for the last 50 years. This is not just CrossFit propaganda on the evils of sugar; it is evidence of the deception and unethical practices that have kept Americans from understanding the dire health implications of sugar consumption. The report was published Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association--Internal Medicine (NOT the CrossFit Journal) and has been picked up by every major news outlet. Read the New York Times version here: How the Sugar Industry Shifted Blame to Fat.

Not outraged yet? Well here is another one. Thanks to Paul for forwarding this on to me. This one makes my blood boil as it hits two of my hot buttons...nutrition and healthcare expenses. I think I have ranted enough today but please read this article, also from the New York Times: Before You Spend $26,000 on Weight Loss Surgery, Do This. Want to know what "this" is? It's a low carbohydrate diet. Turns out that reducing/eliminating wheat, rice, corn, potatoes, fruit and sugars leads to weight loss, improved insulin sensitivity, and lowered cardiovascular risk factors. Oh, and at far less cost and with far less risk than bariatric surgery or long term treatment of Type 2 diabetes with insulin and other medications. Who knew?

Have a great weekend all and I'll see you Monday. Don't forget free intro class on Sunday at 11 and Whole Life Challenge starts Saturday.
