Recommit to the Fundamentals

Here is a little inspiration from CrossFit Headquarters (Squat Better Today). Few of us enjoy really digging into a basic movement like the air squat, but all of us have succumbed at one point or another to "the novice's curse". See if you recognize any of yourself in the following quote:

“Instead of drilling the air squat every day for the last seven years, I’ve viewed it only as “some crap I need to do before I load up the barbell and max out.” Similarly, I tried to snatch more than I could overhead squat, and I tried to walk on my hands before I could hold a handstand. ”

"What's the point" you might ask. We all have a tendency to brush past the fundamentals and move on to sexier, more complex movements long before we are really ready. In the end, this does not serve us well. We would be much better served by recommitting to the basics and mastering the fundamentals. We talk about this in every Intro Class, Starting Line or Private Track and I know that we all believe it deep down inside. Still, we all get distracted by shiny things like 1-rep maxes and benchmark workouts. I don't have a magical cure for this as I am guilty as well. Just consider it food for thought. And I'll leave you with one more quote:

“Sure, drilling the air squat isn’t as sexy as trying to hit a 300-lb. overhead squat, just as driving piles into the muck is boring compared to stacking more and more floors on a skyscraper. But one leads to the other, and it’s foolish to think otherwise. ”
