Meet Andy

When did you start at Catacombs and why?

I believe I started within the first two or three weeks of Tracie and Tom opening the gym eighty-three feet out my back door. I took that as a sign. (Andy was in the 2nd group of athlete's to go through Starting LIne...he couldn't come close to squatting below parallel...)

What do you do to pay the bills?

My wife Abby and I started Nini's Taqueria in 2002 and I've been mastering rice and beans ever since.

How do you like to spend your time when not at work or the gym?

I enjoy running and cycling. These days I mostly work on keeping the plumbing working in my house which is being remodeled.

What do you want to see on the whiteboard when you walk in for a workout (favorite movements, time domains, workout style, etc.)?

I'm usually about half way through any given workout before I comprehend the magic of its components. I've also learned that the tougher the workout, the bigger the endorphine rush when it's done. I use that to get through hard sets.

What gives you a sense of dread when you see it on the whiteboard?

I try to stay at the far end of the room so I can't see what's written on the board till it's too late to flee anyway. "What doesn't kill you....."

How do you use your fitness outside of the gym or why do you care about being fit?

Many of the activities I enjoy involve physical exertion of some sort and it's a great feeling knowing you've worked hard to have your body ready to go when opportunity arises.

What's your favorite motivational quote, song, or ritual?

"Shut up legs!" Jens Voigt. I use it to remind myself to focus on something else (technique??) other than the pain.

Name one thing you want to achieve in the gym in 2015.

My general goal for 2015 is to become more proficient at CrossFit movement and technique. My very specific goal is to dead lift 300lb.

What else do you have to say for yourself?

Friendships and camaraderie (and because I get really grouchy if I don't workout) are the main reasons I show up in the mornings.
