In this week's installment of "Meet Your People", we profile Greg Murray. One of the first athletes at Catacombs and Chief Recruiting Officer for the first few months of our existence. We've loved watching Greg put in the work to transform his health and fitness and couldn't be more proud of his accomplishments thus far. Now, you would be hard-pressed to find an athlete at Catacombs that doesn't know "the Mayor", but let's get under the hood and see what Greg has to say for himself.
When did you start at Catacombs and why? I was looking to get involved in something after years of being sedentary and my brother and his friends the Brachle’s (owners of CrossFit Telluride) suggested CrossFit since it’s a shorter workout compared to riding my bike, and produces a lot of results. About that time I met the Holcombs at work and thought this is fortuitous let’s get this party started.
What do you do to pay the bills? I am a business banker for Wells Fargo and have been here for 2.5 years in DGO and been in banking for 11.
How do you like to spend your time when not at work or the gym? I enjoy a good time, and usually you can find me skiing in the winter on the river in the summer and most nights end at the Ranch and start at El Moro.
What do you want to see on the whiteboard when you walk in for a workout? I like wall balls, deadlifts, KBS. Anything for time or tabata; the power moves are my jam.
What gives you a sense of dread when you see it on the whiteboard? I’m built for pleasure over speed so burpees are pretty much torture and the heavy cardio workouts and I are not friends
How do you use your fitness outside of the gym or why do you care about being fit? My goal is to be fit enough to do any of the Durango activities, (biking backpacking, boating back country) and to be limited by skill perhaps but not by fitness or strength. To really live in Durango you have to be outdoors and I’ve not always been able to hang on a bike ride or a hike and therefore have not enjoyed the adventure. I don’t want that to happen again.
What's your favorite motivational quote, song, or ritual? “More is lost by indecision then wrong decision” --Cicero
Name one thing you want to achieve in the gym in 2015. I’d like to weigh less than 215 by May, my 1 year anniversary of CFC. I’d like to be a L to XL shirt and call someone my girlfriend.
What else do you have to say for yourself? I’d like to think I’m pretty funny, and if you ever need help moving or fun at a party I’m your guy.
Greg's schedule is all over the map, but he will be the first person to introduce himself to you if you find yourself in class with him for the first time. You will be hard-pressed to find anyone working harder than Greg day-in and day-out. He's not afraid to go to the dark place in a workout and has been known to call the dinosaurs on several occasions during his workouts. He embraces every workout, even the ones least suited to his strengths and Catacombs would not be the same place without him.
