I couldn't be happier to introduce Lane as a new addition to our coaching staff. If you haven't had the opportunity to workout with him in a class, make sure you introduce yourself the next time you see him around. Lane brings a broad background in coaching CrossFit and nutrition at other CrossFit affiliates as well as with the Air Force. He will be coaching several hours per week and will provide a different perspective to help you grow as athletes as well as help the gym continue to expand class capacity.

I asked Lane to give us some background and tell us about himself. Here is what he had to say:

Why did you start doing CrossFit and how long have you been at it?
I have been doing CrossFit for roughly four years now.  My journey and love for CrossFit began while I was stationed in Northern California for the Air Force.  One of my fellow airmen told me about a gym where she climbed ropes and more unconventional training. Her detailed accounts of this "functional" training gained my attention.  One day after work, I ventured to my supervisor's house to do a workout in his garage.  Upon arrival, we immediately jumped into a warm up and then the workout "Fran".  Nine minutes and 46 seconds later, it hurt to breathe and my forearms were on fire.  I was in love with this feeling!  I haven't looked back since then and I strongly believe I won't back to the "conventional" gym style of working out.

What do you do when you aren't at Catacombs?  Work/school/family/hobbies?
When I am not at the gym, I will be in my room or library doing schoolwork for Fort Lewis College.  If I have some free time aside from homework, I enjoy catching a movie or just relaxing with Netflix at home.

What do you know now that you wish you had known when you started CrossFit?
I believe in the saying, "There is no such thing as overtraining, only underrecovery."  When I first started, I used to knock out three WODs in one day!  Pretty soon the nagging injuries such as a tender elbow, sensitive shoulder or sprained wrist happened.  So key lesson I learned as I progressed through CrossFit, rest is just as important work.

Do you have any CrossFit or fitness related goals that you are working toward?
The number one goal for me is to have fun and enjoy life through fitness and camaraderie.  Besides the main goals, I would enjoy competing at the CrossFit Southwest Regionals competition in the future.

What inspired you to become a coach?  What inspires you as a coach now?
Becoming a coach came unintentionally for me throughout my life because I try my best to communicate properly and part of effective communication at times is proper instruction.  From high school wrestling, teaching nutrition in the Air Force or CrossFit, I have always enjoyed seeing people make positive progression and to never stop learning.  Other people's progression and enjoyment from CrossFit is the main thing keeps me coaching.

Fun fact?  Embarrassing story?
My embarrassing story took place at the 2013 CrossFit Games in Carson, California.  At the games, there were vendors all over the place that included food, clothing and equipment.  One of the workouts for that year featured a 100+ lbs. medball!  My friend and I were walking around and we came across the vendor that was selling that behemoth of a medicine ball.  Curiosity got the best of me, so I attempted to pick the very heavy medicine ball up.  I quickly went into a deep squat to pick it up and heard a loud, "RIIPPPPPPPP" at the bottom of my deep squat.  My shorts completely ripped at the inseam and the crowd got a nice view.  So my lift was a NO REP for an uncommon reason and the Rogue tent made a profit from my newly purchased rogue shorts (Which I still have FYI).  I realized that stretchy and flexible shorts are key for workouts.
